45 Days Until Wrestlemania 28: Warrior and Savage at Wrestlemania VII

The road toWrestlemania 28 is winding down even further with 45 days and counting, withthe huge main event between the Rock and John Cena April 1^st 2012 inMiami and Sheamus receiving a championship opportunity for winning the RoyalRumble. Today, we talk about the epic career ending match between “The MachoKing” Randy Savage against the Ultimate Warrior at Wrestlemania VII.

Savage-Warrior:Pure Wrestling Magic

As we have discussed over thepast many days on this blog, the Ultimate Warrior and Randy Savage had manyhuge matches at Wrestlemania. There might have been no match better with eitherof them, then their huge match. It all started with the Royal Rumble 1991, whenSensational Queen Sherri tried to get the Ultimate Warrior to give her man, theMacho King, Randy Savage, a title shot. Warrior said no, and Savage retaliatedwith nailing Warrior with his scepter, costing him the World Wrestling FederationChampionship.

The stage was set, a careerending match between Randy Savage and the Ultimate Warrior. That stipulationhad not been completely polluted as of yet come 1991. The stage was set furtherby Miss Elizabeth being in the crowd, having been separated from Randy Savagein the storyline for a couple of years. A nice touch was the Ultimate Warriorwalking to the ring as opposed to his out of control running.

The match was pretty much one ofthe early epic Mania matches that would set the stage for many future matches,with finishing after finisher. The Ultimate Warrior’s Gorilla Press and Splashcombination did not get the win. Nor did five flying elbowdrops for Savage. TheUltimate Warrior thought about throwing it all away for the moment but Savageattacked him. Warrior nailed Savage with three vicious shoulderblocks in a rowfor the pin. Savage had run out of gas. That might be the peak of the UltimateWarrior’s career for sure and Savage would have many greater moments, despitehis career being ended.

Naturally Sherri was not happy,so she stormed the ring and attacked Randy Savage, but Elizabeth made thesavage. The first couple of wrestling, Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth werereunited, to a tearful reaction, leading to their storyline wedding later thatyear. Sadly their real life relationship was on its last legs, but it was magicin the ring.

Randy Savage against the UltimateWarrior, from both a wrestling and story standpoint, perhaps one of thegreatest matches in Wrestlemania history.
